The new Medical/Oncology is a wonderful compliment to the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre. Surgical oncology plays a critical role in the continuum of cancer treatment and care which includes surgery for a wide variety of cancers. It is a role that includes significant developments to improve outcome, particularly in terms of intergration with radiation and systemic therapies.
Located on the 6th floor of the C Wing, the Inpatient Oncology and Nephrology unit features walk-in wheelchair accessible washrooms and large, bright patient care rooms.
The New Unit includes:
- 10,753 square feet
- Ceiling lifts in every patient care room
- 6-bed flex unit to enable timely admissions and discharges
- 38 bed unit dedicated to Oncology and Supportive/Palliative Care for patients who have complex cancer and other conditions that cannot be managed through outpatient care or at home. It will also be home to patients referred from outside the Region
- An Oncology/Hematology Clinic
- A Supportive/Palliative care team that provides weekly plan and symptom manangement clinics, telephone support for patients managing pain at home, and emotional and spiritual support for patients, staff and families
